SUBJECT:    CONSTRUCTION ALERT – Mid-Coast LRT Project: Voigt Drive Reconfiguration

Project Description/Location:

Construction activities for the Mid-Coast Light Rail Transit (LRT) Project continue with the construction of the elevated track along Voigt Drive. In preparation for the construction of the elevated guideway through the UC San Diego campus, several modifications are needed to Voigt Drive to accommodate vehicular, pedestrian and bicycle traffic in order to ensure safety as work is being performed overhead. Traffic Lanes will be reconfigured on Voigt Drive, west of Interstate 5, from the Voigt bridge to Lyman Lane. On the evenings of January 3, 2018 and January 7, 2018 between 9:00pm and 5:00am, there will be intermittent partial lane closures during the modification of Voigt Drive. The project scope will include restriping traffic lanes on Voigt Drive, the installation of new traffic control signage along the road, and placing concrete barriers along Voigt Drive to protect the public from future construction activities. Access for vehicles, bicycles and pedestrians along Voigt Drive will be maintained at all times.

Immediate Parking Lot, Street Traffic, and Pedestrian Impacts:

On the nights of January 3rd and 7th, one lane for traffic will remain available for alternating two-way traffic and will be controlled by a traffic control crew. Access for pedestrians, bicyclists and vehicles will remain available. Please follow the directions of the flaggers and construction signage when travelling through this area.

When this work is complete, Voigt Drive will be reconfigured for bicycle, vehicle and pedestrian traffic for a period of at least two years and no more than four years, which will include the following changes:

-Street restriping will narrow the road and bikes will share the roadway with vehicles.
-The sidewalk on the South side of the street will be removed and all pedestrian traffic will be directed to use the available sidewalk on the North side of the street
-The Eastbound UC San Diego shuttle stop #298, across the street from P510, will be eliminated. Alternate shuttle stops can be found at the following link: https://transportation.ucsd.edu/shuttles/

With the reconfiguration of Voigt Drive west of I-5, it is very important that drivers and bicyclists obey all traffic laws and posted signage in the area. Bicycles and vehicles will now share drive lanes in this area, so please be aware of your surroundings.

Thank you for your patience during these construction activities.
