SUBJECT:    CONSTRUCTION ALERT – Regents Road / Eastgate Mall Intersection and Athena Way Access to UCSD Medical Center – Temporary Closure

Project Location/Description:

The City of San Diego is currently working on a project to widen Regents Road between Genesee Avenue and Executive Drive from a two-lane street to a four-lane street with new bike lanes. Regents Road provides access to UC San Diego’s East Campus including the Medical Center, parking facilities, graduate housing facilities, and the UC San Diego Science Research Park. The Regents Road project scope includes final asphalt paving of the Regents Rd / Eastgate Mall intersection, for which there will be a short-term closure of the Athena Way entry to UC San Diego Medical Center – La Jolla.
Immediate Street Traffic, and Pedestrian Impacts:
Effective Saturday, February 10, 2018 at 6:00am through Sunday, February 11, 2018 at 12:00am midnight, north and southbound lanes of Regents Road will be closed from Executive Drive to Health Sciences Drive. During this construction activity, the Athena Way entrance into the UC San Diego Medical Center and Science Research Park will be temporarily closed. Vehicular traffic traveling northbound on Regents Road and westbound traffic on Eastgate Mall will be detoured to the Health Sciences Drive entrance and signage will be posted at the detour. Access from Campus Point Drive and Genesee will be unaffected. Ambulance access to the Emergency Department will remain available at all times. Pedestrians and bicyclists will be allowed to cross at the Eastgate and Regents intersection using two of the four existing crosswalks. Construction flaggers will be present to assist pedestrians cross as needed.

Patient, staff, visitor, and emergency vehicle access to the UCSD Medical Center will remain available at all times.
Pedestrian and Bicycle traffic should use Campus Point Drive to access the Medical Center and east campus.
