ALL ACADEMICS, STAFF AND STUDENTS AT UC SAN DIEGO

SUBJECT:    Safe Use of Motorized Mobility Devices

In recent months, use of motorized scooters, motorized skateboards and other small, motorized mobility devices has increased on campus. We want to remind the campus community that UC San Diego has established guidelines for the proper use of bicycles, skateboards, scooters, and similar wheeled devices; also, the UC San Diego Police Department is enforcing regulations related to their use.

Motorized mobility devices may be used in designated bike lanes as well as on curbed streets. Riders of any motorized devices should always yield to pedestrians and slower traffic in all locations. For details about operating these devices on campus, see http://police.ucsd.edu/resources/bike-skate.html.

As technology and mobility options continue to evolve, the university will seek to update policies and facilities to encourage the safe circulation of people throughout campus. Existing policies are currently under review. We will be developing outreach and education efforts over the next several months and will provide opportunities to share ideas and information.

If you have any questions about the use of wheeled mobility devices on campus, contact Ian Happle, UC San Diego Police Bicycle Officer, ihapple@ucsd.edu or email us at rmpfeedback@ucsd.edu. We appreciate your cooperation.

Sincerely,

Gary C. Matthews
