SUBJECT:    Search for the Dean of the Graduate Division

We are pleased to invite nominations and applications for the position of Dean of the Graduate Division from candidates internal to the University of California system and others with significant University of California experience. UC San Diego Executive Recruitment Services will provide assistance with the search process, and University Librarian Erik Mitchell has agreed to chair the Search Advisory Committee (see below).

Reporting directly to the Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and a key member of the University's leadership team, the Dean of the Graduate Division sets the vision for graduate education and develops divisional goals and long-range plans in alignment with the university’s strategic vision. Moreover, the dean promotes high standards in research, education and administration, promotes and addresses the needs of an outstanding and diverse graduate student body, and partners and collaborates with the academic divisions in the recruitment and retention of graduate students. The dean works with the academic administrators, the Academic Senate, and other units in the innovation, development, implementation and maintenance of programs that benefit graduate students. The dean also represents the division in forums at the UC system, local, state, national and international levels. POSITION DESCRIPTION

RESPONSIBILITIES: Functions, activities, and programs for which the position is responsible:

As a key member of the University's leadership, the Dean of the Graduate Division reports directly to the Executive Vice Chancellor- Academic Affairs and represents the university at the campus, local, state, and national levels. Moreover, the Dean sets the vision for graduate education and develops divisional goals and long-range plans in alignment with the University’s strategic vision.

GRADUATE STUDIES ADMINISTRATION
• Oversees graduate admissions, academic progress to degree, financial support, student affairs, graduate student academic employee collective bargaining, and the granting of higher degrees;
• Serves as an ex-officio member of the Graduate Council of the Academic Senate in administering policies, procedures, requirements, and standards for graduate study;
• Collaborates with academic departments to recruit and admit an excellent and diverse graduate student body;
• As applicable, coordinates the reviews of individual graduate programs or the graduate program portions of reviews of entire academic units; and
• Represents UC San Diego at the University of California (UC) Council of Graduate Deans, the AAU Association of Graduate Schools, the Council of Graduate schools, and other UC and national forums.

GENERAL ADMINISTRATION
• Advises the Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs on General Campus budget priorities and funding models and resource allocations for graduate education;
• Serves as a key member of the Executive Vice Chancellor’s senior team, collaborating with colleagues on a wide array of cross-campus initiatives that involve, but are not limited to, graduate education or the graduate student experience;
• Advises senior Development staff and assumes a leadership role in fundraising initiatives for graduate student support;
• Collaborates with academic deans, department chairs, Counseling & Psychological Services, Vice Chancellor for Equity, Diversity & Inclusion and senior administrative staff to create an equitable, inclusive and supportive student-centric campus; and
• Advises and makes recommendations to the Executive Vice Chancellor, Campus Counsel, and senior administrative staff on the review and resolution of academic employee relations issues.

SCOPE
Amount and complexity of assignments for which the position is responsible:

• Sets and promotes high academic and ethical standards for graduate education;
• Collaborates on the creation of new modalities of graduate education;
• Helps departments and programs develop an outstanding, diverse faculty and graduate student body and inclusive unit cultures;
• Serves on campus-wide and University-wide committees as designated;
• Represents the campus at local, State, national, and international levels;
• Is responsible for the functions of the Office of the Graduate Division. Supervises and provides general direction to the staff;
• Interacts with department chairs, graduate program advisers, the General Campus divisional deans, directors of interdisciplinary programs and institutes, the Dean of the School of Medicine, and the Vice Chancellor-Student Affairs, on the full range of issues affecting graduate education;
• Cooperates with Academic Senate leadership on graduate education and general academic matters; serves as a member, ex officio, of the Graduate Council of the Academic Senate;
• Interacts with and advises UC vice presidents and their staff on graduate education matters.
Skill and/or experience necessary to be successful in this position:

• A distinguished record of teaching, research, and professional service appropriate for a tenured Full Professor appointment at UC San Diego;
• Outstanding scholarly credentials and broadly recognized national stature;
• A commitment to academic excellence and an interest in and commitment to graduate education.
• An appreciation of the dual research and educational missions of a major research university;
• Ability to set clear goals and to build a coherent entrepreneurial organizational culture for both scholars and staff;
• Ability to interact effectively with faculty, staff, and other administrators;
• Ability to direct and supervise staff;
• Ability to manage the partnerships and relations between campus units that are critical to the University’s graduate education undertakings;
• Ability to create a culture grounded in integrity and ethical behavior;
