After nearly 38 years of distinguished service at UC San Diego, Assistant Vice Chancellor, Human Resource and Chief of Staff to the Vice Chancellor, Chief Financial Officer, Cathy Ledford will be retiring effective June 30, 2018.

Cathy began her career in1980 at UC San Diego Medical Center as an Administrative Assistant in the Health Services Program. After obtaining her Master in Business Administration, she held positions in various departments primarily in UC San Diego Health organization. These include Senior Analyst to the Chief Financial Officer, Medical Center; Principal Analyst to the Dean, Clinical Affairs; Principal Analyst to the School of Medicine Vice Chancellor and Dean for the School of Medicine; Department Business Officer, Department of Anesthesiology; Director, Cost Competitive Strategy Implementation Team; Administrative Director, Quality Management; Director, Service Improvement; Administrative Vice Chair, Shiley Eye Institute, Department of Ophthalmology.

In 2013, Cathy became Chief of Staff to UC San Diego’s Vice Chancellor of Business and External Affairs - now Vice Chancellor and Chief Financial Officer. After the retirement of the AVC-Human Resources in 2014, she was asked to step in as Interim AVC-Human Resources, a position that she held for 9 months. One year later, she was appointed to the role on a permanent basis.

Cathy’s has had a tremendous impact over her thirty eight- years at UC San Diego. Early in her career, she provided process and analytical support to Medical Center departments to achieve significant efficiencies. While at the Shiley Eye Institute, she oversaw the renovation of the Ratner Eye Center, which had experienced a devastating flood. As the AVC Human Resources, she provided oversight for the successful implementation of Career Tracks, revamping of the Performance Appraisal process, and managed all Senior Management Group appointments and compensation.

Most importantly, Cathy’s deep understanding of the various facets of the campus, her many connections across the University and her impeccable judgement makes her a trusted advisor to the entire campus leadership on many strategic, organizational and personnel issues. From my very first day with the University to this day, Cathy has been a very close thought partner and I will miss her greatly.

A national search for the AVC-Human Resources position is underway.
