April 10, 2018
We invite all students, faculty, staff, and alumni to attend the upcoming staged readings of the plays Purely Academic on April 12 and 13, 2018 and Margin of Error on May 21, 2018. As a premier public university with a strong research focus, ethics are a critical part of our mission. We are excited to offer this fresh perspective which we hope and trust will generate important conversations across campus. These readings are being hosted by the UC San Diego Research Ethics Program and the Earl Warren College Office of the Provost, with support from the Institute for Practical Ethics.
Purely Academic dramatizes the darker side of academia, including both
personal and professional clashes in academic research. It invites an
honest discussion about professional ethics and practices today. What
“persona” is cultivated by today’s academic regime? What does it mean to
be an academic today? Is it possible to be both ethical and successful
in the 21st century University? Margin of Error, by Will Cooper (playwright with San Diego's Roustabouts
Theatre Co.), will be performed by the professional actors of the
Roustabouts. Framed around a fictional group of physicists, the play
highlights competition in science and how it has handled by those
involved. We hope you will be able to be able to attend!
