CAMPUS NOTICE

OFFICE OF THE EXECUTIVE VICE CHANCELLOR

JUNE 7, 2018

ALL STUDENTS AT UC SAN DIEGO

SUBJECT:    All Campus Commencement Keynote Speaker Update

Dear Students,

Due to a UC-wide speaker boycott called by AFSCME Local 3299, Rep. John
Lewis has withdrawn as UC San Diego’s All Campus Commencement keynote
speaker. Speaking in his stead will be Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla.

We invited Lewis to be the keynote speaker because we believe his
message is important to making our world a better place and aligns with
our Triton values of challenging conventional wisdom and never settling
for the status quo. While we regret that Lewis will not be able to join
us at this exciting event, we understand his desire to stand up for his
beliefs. These are ideals we hope you will carry with you as you begin
your next chapter as UC San Diego alumni.

Chancellor Khosla will lead the ceremonies and echo the challenge to all
graduates to continue pushing for a better future for our global
society. We look forward to continuing the celebration of your
commencement with you and your families, complete with all the pomp and
circumstance, joy, and pride that this most impressive accomplishment
deserves.
