It is with great pleasure that we announce the appointment of Robert Continetti, Distinguished Professor of Chemistry, as Senior Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs (Sr. AVC-AA), effective August 1, 2018.
Dr. Continetti will serve as a principal advisor to Executive Vice Chancellor Simmons on all Academic Personnel matters, and provide leadership at the intersection between the academic mission and administrative processes in the key areas of Academic Planning, Resource Management and Planning, and Space and Capital Planning for the General Campus.
In this role, he will oversee and manage the Senate and non-Senate academic personnel process, serving as the EVCís primary liaison with the Committee on Academic Personnel (CAP), and providing oversight for academic compensation and academic employee relations matters. In coordination with the Deans of Undergraduate Education and Graduate Division, he will administer the planning and implementation of new campus academic programs and initiatives that involve multiple divisions within the General Campus divisions or academic divisions across campus, such as the Strategic Academic Program Development (SAPD) initiative. He will co-lead the campus re-accreditation process with the Dean of Undergraduate Education, and will contribute to numerous collaborative Senate-Administration efforts.
A member of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry since 1992, Dr. Continetti has a strong history of service to UC San Diego. He served for two terms as Chair of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, and as Chair of the Chancellorís Diversity Council. His service to the Academic Senate has included Chair of the Graduate Council, Vice Chair of the Committee on Planning and Budget, Chair of the San Diego Division of the Academic Senate and member of the Committee on Academic Personnel. His 26 years of administrative and service contributions have provided him with unique preparation for the role of Sr. AVC-AA.
Dr. Continetti is an experimental physical chemist, with research interests focusing on the studies of the reaction dynamics of isolated molecules, clusters and nanoparticles. He is an elected Fellow of the American Physical Society (APS) and currently serves as an elected Councilor for the Division of Chemical Physics on the APS Executive Council. His research and teaching efforts have been recognized with numerous awards including a Camille Dreyfus New Faculty Award, a Packard Fellowship in Science and Engineering, a Camille Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Award, an Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowship and an Earl Warren College Teaching Award. Dr. Continetti is also a recipient of the American Chemical Society Physical Chemistry Division Award in Experimental Chemistry and a UC San Diego Diversity Champion Award.
