CAMPUS NOTICE

OFFICE OF THE CHANCELLOR

April 8, 2019

ALL ACADEMICS, STAFF AND STUDENTS AT UC SAN DIEGO (Including UC Health)

SUBJECT:    Advancing the Latinx/Chicanx Academic Excellence Initiative

Led by the Office for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion, the
Latinx/Chicanx Academic Excellence Initiative is a unique opportunity to
collaborate across campus to improve access and inclusive excellence for
Latinx/Chicanx students, staff, and faculty. At the heart of the
initiative is the desire to transform our institution by attracting,
retaining, and supporting a diverse faculty, staff, and student body
with the goal of reflecting California’s demographics and achieving
institutional excellence.

On Tuesday, April 23rd a campus-wide meeting will be held at the Great
Hall, Eleanor Roosevelt College from 11:30am-1:00pm where Chancellor
Khosla, EVC Simmons, and VC Petitt will speak about the Latinx/Chicanx
Academic Excellence Initiative design to ensure that California’s
fastest growing student population continues to feel welcome, are
supported, and able to thrive at UC San Diego. Two hours of
administrative leave with pay have been approved for employees who
attend this event. Supervisors, upon request, may approve the use of
such leave when the absence does not infringe upon the performance of
required job duties or patient care.

What is Latinx/Chicanx?

The “x” transforms the gender-specific terms “Latino” and “Chicano” into
more inclusive forms of identity for men, women, nonbinary people, and
those who are gender non-conforming. Latinx recognizes those whose roots
stem from Latin America, while Chicanx is an identity rooted in a social
justice movement that seeks to empower Mexican American and Latinx
communities.
