SUBJECT:    Announcing Director of the Center for Energy Research

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Jan Kleissl as Director of
the Center for Energy Research (CER) (http://cer.ucsd.edu/), an
Organized Research Unit at UC San Diego, effective July 1, 2019. Kleissl
is currently a Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace
Engineering, conducting research focusing on the interaction of weather
with engineering systems, in particular buildings and their energy use
and solar power systems on the electric grid. He has served as CER's
Associate Director since 2010 and serves on the International Energy
Agency task force for solar resources and forecasting.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Professor Farhat Beg for
his four years of service as CER's director. Under his leadership, the
CER became the third largest Organized Research Unit at UC San Diego. In
this time, CER won several large awards including the University of
California Office of the President Lab Fee award to establish the Center
for Frontiers in High Energy Density Science and the National Nuclear
Security Administration’s (NNSA) Center of Excellence on Matter Under
Extreme Conditions. His leadership has been instrumental in promoting
diversity, and in 2016 CER’s Outreach Committee was awarded the UC San
Diego Inclusive Excellence Award for demonstrating outstanding support
of the UC San Diego Principles of Community. His future plans include
running the newly formed NNSA Center of Excellence. Please join me in
thanking him for his service.
