SUBJECT:    CONSTRUCTION ALERT – Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Marine Conservation and Technology Facility: Start of Construction

Project Location/Description: Located at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, the project would renovate and add an addition to the existing vacated buildings (former Southwest Fisheries Buildings A and D) to create the Marine Conservation
and Technology Facility (MCTF). The project is located on La Jolla
Shores Drive, between Biological Grade and La Jolla Shores Lane, at the
northwest portion of the Scripps Institution campus. Construction on
MCTF begins June 29, 2020 with completion by December 2021.

MCTF will be the nexus of the Center for Marine Biodiversity and
Conservation (CMBC), which is poised to take a greatly increased role in
the global arena of science for solutions in marine biodiversity and
conservation. The teaching and research in MCTF will promote
interdisciplinary approaches to understand and maintain the integrity of
ocean ecosystems and manage their use in the face of rapid and
inevitable global change. MCTF will provide new undergraduate and
graduate teaching and research facilities, including a large basement
aquaria facility, in order to accomplish these goals.

Immediate Parking Lot, Street Traffic, and Pedestrian Impacts:
The existing facility parking lot will be closed for the duration of
construction and the perimeter of the job site will be enclosed by
chain-link fence with screen. La Jolla Shores Drive, Biological Grade,
and all sidewalks, will remain open throughout the construction.
Vehicular traffic can expect intermittent delays with flaggers, due to
construction traffic entering and exiting the job site. Please proceed
with caution, reduce speeds, and allow additional time when traveling in
this area.
