Announcement of the Retirement of David Rose, Chief of Police, UC San Diego Police Department
University of California San Diego Chief of Police David Rose has announced his decision to retire after 39 years of service, effective June 29, 2021. Lieutenant Melissa Luth will serve as Interim Police Chief.
Rose joined the UC San Diego Police Department as a community service officer while a student at Muir College in 1982. He served as a security officer and police dispatcher before becoming a sworn officer in 1985, after graduating from the 100th San Diego Police Academy. Over the next 29 years, he was promoted through the ranks of the UC San Diego Police Department and became Chief of Police in 2014.
Over his decades of service, Rose oversaw police functions for the campus, directing and managing strategic and tactical responses to campus emergencies. He commanded security for high-profile campus visits from President Bill Clinton and the Dalai Lama, among others. Rose also advocated for cooperative and collaborative partnerships with students, staff, faculty and visitors, guiding the university’s Transformational Policing Initiative and contributing to the University of California’s Presidential Campus Safety Plan.
We wish him well upon his retirement, and thank him for his outstanding service to the university.
