SUBJECT:  Business and First Class Airfare

We have been advised by the Office of the President that the 10 hour rule that applies to business and first class airfare has been rescinded. Here is a summary of the current policy as it applies to UCSD business travel.

Business and first class airfare is allowed under the following conditions when:
--business or first-class service is the only service offered between two points;
--coach class would be more expensive or time consuming (such as when scheduling difficulties would require an unnecessary hotel expense, circuitous routing, or an unduly long layover when making connections);
--an itinerary involves overnight travel without an opportunity for normal rest before the commencement of working hours; and
--necessary to accommodate either a medical need or disability as certified by a physician.

The aforementioned conditions are allowable and can be charged to federal, state, and other non restricted funds, when permitted by the specific fund source.
