January 19, 2004
You are cordially invited to join the Ledden family and friends, and the UCSD community, for a memorial tribute to Patrick J. Ledden, provost of John Muir College, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. on February 2, 2004, in the Ida and Cecil Green Faculty Club. Provost Ledden, a beloved educator, administrator, mathematician and champion of the arts, died Oct. 28 after a long battle with cancer. He was 67. Pat served for the past 16 years as provost of John Muir College, proudly guiding it so that it maintained, as he said, "the heritage of the remarkable man for whom it was named." A professor of mathematics, Pat specialized in topology and taught this and other mathematical subjects at UCSD for 36 years. As a true Renaissance man, he also cared deeply about the humanities and arts, with interests ranging from the literature of James Joyce to the sculptures in the famed Stuart Collection. While serving as associate chancellor under Chancellor Richard Atkinson, Pat was closely involved with the development of the renowned Stuart Collection, which now includes 15 works sited throughout the UCSD campus. He also served as president of the board of the Russell Foundation, established in 1980 to strengthen bonds between the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego and UCSD. Pat taught an upper division seminar on James Joyce in the Department of Literature, contributed articles to the James Joyce Quarterly and the James Joyce Annual and led a daylong reading of Joyce's classic novel, Ulysses, in the UCSD Bookstore on the anniversary of Bloomsday. His most enduring legacy may be seen in his beloved students, to whom he communicated his enthusiasm for learning and the pleasures and values of intellectual exchange. I hope you can join me at this community tribute to Pat's remarkable legacy.
