SUBJECT:    Appointment of Suresh Subramani as Senior Vice Chancellor –
Academic Affairs

Following an extensive national search, I am pleased to announce the appointment of UC San Diego’s Suresh Subramani as our new Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs (SVCAA), effective immediately. Dr. Subramani has served the campus well as Acting SVCAA since October 1, 2010, and has played a key role in the university’s strategic planning in response to continued state budget cuts. I am grateful that Dr. Subramani has agreed to join UC San Diego’s leadership team at this challenging time in our university’s history. I am confident that he will be an effective partner in our efforts to keep UC San Diego at the forefront of teaching and research, building on our academic strengths and maintaining the excellence of our academic core.

Prior to the role of Acting SVCAA, Dr. Subramani served as Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Planning and Resources since February 2009. He served as a key advisor on a wide range of issues and was responsible for planning, oversight and the implementation of new campus academic programs and initiatives. He has provided essential leadership in the planning of resources to meet programmatic and capital program goals, in the development of the State Capital Improvement Plan, and has overseen the use of technology-enhanced instruction. His administrative experience also includes serving as the last Chair of the Department of Biology prior to its reorganization as a Division, and as Interim Dean, Associate Dean, and Associate Dean for Operations for the Division of Biological Sciences.

A Professor of Molecular Biology and a highly distinguished cell and molecular biologist, Dr. Subramani has been a member of the UC San Diego faculty since 1981. He received his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of California, Berkeley and is world renowned for his work in the field of peroxisome biogenesis and disassembly. He is an outstanding scholar and recipient of several awards, including the Searle Scholar Award, an NCI Research Career Development Award, and Guggenheim Fellowship. He is an outstanding teacher, has an excellent record as a graduate student mentor and advisor, and a strong record of international, national and UC service.

Please join me in congratulating Dr. Subramani on his appointment as our new Senior Vice Chancellor. His breadth of leadership experience combined with his academic accomplishments, values, vision and energy, have and will continue to serve UC San Diego well.
