516-14 Hazardous Waste Disposal
All waste materials shall be removed from individual spaces and from the general campus area as often as necessary to prevent disease, pest, nuisance, and safety problems. Prior to removal, waste materials must be stored in appropriate, secured containers.
A. General Wastes
General wastes shall be confined to leak‑proof, impervious containers. Fly‑tight covers shall be provided for all outside containers and containers cleaned frequently enough to prevent fly, rodent, or other nuisance problems.
B. Toxic and Special Wastes
1. Toxic, explosive, flammable, corrosive, radioactive materials, and any other hazardous wastes must never be disposed of in the general waste facilities. Call the Environment, Health and Safety Office (EH&S) for disposal of hazardous waste. Empty chemical bottles shall be air dried, and label defaced prior to disposal in the regular trash.
2. Animal carcasses shall be disposed of either through the Animal Care Program or by methods specifically approved by EH&S. Carcasses may not be disposed of in the general trash.
3. Refer to PPM 516‑14, Hazardous Waste Disposal, for specific information on disposal of hazardous waste.
A. Containers and removal of general trash are provided by Facilities Management or other similar administrative units.
B. It is the responsibility of each administrative unit to assure that the proper method of disposal is used for each specific type of waste.
