In order to prevent disease, nuisance, and material loss associated with insects, rodents, and other pests, Environment, Health and Safety (EH&S) will conduct a comprehensive pest management program to control and advise on problems involving pests on UCSD property. In animal handling facilities where wastes, bedding materials, etc., may cause problems with flies, rodents, and other pests, the material shall be removed as frequently as necessary to prevent a breeding or nuisance situation. Feed used for animals shall be adequately protected, properly rotated, and stored away from rodents and other pests. Animal handling and food facilities shall be periodically inspected by Environment, Health and Safety. Any pest infestation in such facilities shall be abated by EH&S in conjunction with the facility manager. The Housing and Dining Services Department shall inform EH&S of any pest related problems in their structures and EH&S shall implement appropriate abatement action. Physical Plant Services and/or Housing and Dining Services shall be responsible for contracting with a licensed Pest Control Operator for the abatement of termites on UCSD property. Prior clearance for each fumigation or pesticide application shall be obtained from the EH&S Office. The Grounds Department shall contract with a licensed Pest Control Operator for the control of outdoor pests beyond building perimeters (weeds, rodents, etc.). This will be done upon the approval of EH&S. Grounds is also responsible for skunk abatement, bee removal, and routine mosquito surveillance and abatement. The UCSD Medical Center shall provide a qualified/licensed employee to perform pest control services within hospital controlled space in cooperation with EH&S. Requests for control of pest infestation or nuisance problems inside any structure will be made known to EH&S and performed by either EH&S or an approved contractor. Any request for control of pests beyond building perimeters will be made known to Physical Plant Services and performed by their licensed operator. Pesticides and other economic poisons will be used only by EH&S personnel, a licensed Pest Control Operator approved by EH&S, or under conditions specifically approved by EH&S. Prior approval from the EH&S Office shall be obtained for each pesticide used, and monthly usage reports shall be submitted to EH&S showing pesticide used, quantity, date, and location. |
