OFFICE OF THE ASSISTANT VICE CHANCELLOR
PERSONNEL
May 26, 1993
ALL AT UCSD
SUBJECT: Mediation Training
The use of mediation as a form of alternative dispute resolution
is rising in popularity among employers across the country as the
number and intensity of workplace conflicts grows. Mediation
relies upon the use of an impartial third party (mediator) to
structure and facilitate a meeting at which disputing parties
discuss their issues, solve problems and reach agreements.
At UCSD, a mediation unit is being established in order to
resolve workplace disputes and foster solving problems
creatively. While a number of UCSD employees already have been
trained through the San Diego Mediation Center and are continuing
to develop their skills for the purpose of serving as mediators,
there is a need for more employees to become involved in the
establishment of a mediation unit dedicated to dispute resolution
at UCSD.
For persons interested in serving as mediators, there are 20
openings in a three day (all day) Introductory Mediation Skills
Training Class to be held June 29 through July 1 on campus. The
training will be conducted by the San Diego Mediation Center and
there will be no charge to the persons selected to participate.
Attendance for the duration of each of the sessions is mandatory
in order to serve as a mediator.
No prior mediation experience is required to become a mediator.
Effective communication skills and the ability to work with
conflict while remaining neutral and non-judgmental are
essential. In addition to the all day training June 29 through
July 1, there must be a commitment to devoting approximately 5
hours per month on a continuing basis to additional training and
performing mediations. Thus, interested persons should discuss
the time commitment for serving as mediators with their
supervisors and obtain approval for release time in advance.
If you are interested in becoming a mediator at UCSD, please
complete the attached questionnaire and response form and forward
via U. S. mail to: San Diego Mediation Center, 2150 West Washington,
Suite 112, San Diego, CA 92110. All response forms must be received no
later than the close of business on Tuesday, June 8, 1993.
Representatives from the San Diego Mediation Center, UCSD Staff
Associations and the Department of Personnel Services will be
meeting with interested candidates within the next two weeks in
order to provide additional information and select the 20
prospective mediators. Locations, dates and times for these
follow-up meetings will be announced shortly.
