OFFICE OF THE VICE CHANCELLOR - BUSINESS AFFAIRS September 3, 1993 KEY ADMINISTRATORS/KEY SUPPORT STAFF SUBJECT: Personnel Department Name Change As you may know, the Assistant Vice Chancellor of Personnel, Rogers Davis, started his career at UCSD in July. Since that time, he and I have had lengthy discussions about the focus and future direction for the Personnel Department. Increasingly, the valuing of human resources within the University is the essence of the Personnel Department's role in supporting the mission of UCSD. We believe that the current name of the Personnel Department does not properly send this message. As a result, I am announcing that effective immediately, the name of the Personnel Department is changed to the Human Resources Department. The change is more than just in name. It reflects a new direction, including a new vision and mission. The vision toward which the Department will aspire and the mission on which it will focus are as follows: Vision To be the Model Human Resources organization by - Valuing People - Maximizing Employee Potential - Exceeding Customer Expectations Mission We are dedicated to exemplary customer service in support of the Teaching, Research, Patient Care, and Public Service mission of UCSD. Our leadership strategies and programs will attract, retain, and motivate a work force of the best qualified people whose diversity and skills contribute to and sustain UCSD's excellence. The staff of UCSD is a highly valued resource, and effective use of this resource is a shared responsibility. I am confident that the goals that are established in support of this vision and mission will provide leadership to the campus in utilizing our human resources productively and creatively with sensitivity. We seek your support and guidance as partners in achieving these goals. Steven W.
