OFFICE OF THE VICE CHANCELLOR ACADEMIC AFFAIRS October 7, 1993 KEY ADMINISTRATORS/KEY SUPPORT STAFF SUBJECT: Dean, School of Engineering Appointment It gives me great pleasure to inform you that Chancellor Atkinson has designated Dr. Robert Conn as the new Dean of the School of Engineering succeeding Dr. Lea Rudee, who will return to research and teaching at the end of the Fall Quarter 1993. Joining the faculty of UCLA in 1980 as professor of mechanical, aerospace and nuclear engineering, Dr. Conn currently is Director of the Institute of Plasma and Fusion Research. Dr. Conn received a B.S. degree in chemical engineering and physics from Pratt Institute (1964), an M.S. degree in mechanical engineering (1965) and a Ph.D. degree in engineering science (1968), both from the California Institute of Technology. Dr. Conn has held numerous appointments during his distinguished academic and administrative career, He is a member of the International Scientific and Technical Advisory Committee for the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) project; chair of the U.S. Department of Energy's fusion Energy Advisory Committee, a post he was appointed to in 1991 by the Secretary of Energy; member of the Advisory Committee of the Provost at the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory at Princeton University; and elected to the National Academy of Engineering. This appointment will be effective January 1, 1994, and must be approved by the Academic Senate and the University of California Board of Regents. Marjorie C.
