UCSD
CAMPUS NOTICE
University of California, San Diego

OFFICE OF THE CHANCELLOR
October 25, 1993
TO ALL ACADEMIC AND STAFF EMPLOYEES
SUBJECT: 1993 Annual Notice on Substance Abuse
Each year the faculty, staff, and students of the University of California are reminded of UCSD's commitment to a campus environment free from the problems of substance abuse. For this purpose, key administrators should post this notice in a visible area.
Although national statistics show that the use of illegal drugs has been declining in the United States, there has been an increase in San Diego County in the number of individuals admitted to drug treatment programs, deaths resulting from drug overdoses, and arrests for drug offenses. And, despite warnings concerning the use of alcohol and tobacco, both substances continue to be leading causes of death in our country.
If you or someone you know has a problem with substance abuse, contact the Faculty and Staff Assistance Program on campus at 534-5523 or the Employee Assistance Program at the Medical Center at 294-6455. These support services are strictly confidential and are free of charge to faculty and staff employees.
A publication entitled "Substance Abuse Program: Official Notice
to Academic and Staff Employees and Students," is available and provides information on substance abuse; where help is available; and the requirements for reporting convictions for and consequences of substance abuse while on University business or property. If you have not received a copy of the Official Notice, contact your department personnel representative.
Please join me in reaffirming a commitment to a University family free from the problems of substance abuse.
