SUBJECT: Establishment of Director of Latin American Studies
I am pleased to announce the establishment of the position of Director of Latin American Studies and the appointment of Professor Peter Smith as Director of Latin American Studies.
The Director of Latin American Studies is responsible for providing leadership for the promotion, development, and coordination of teaching, research, and outreach activities on Latin America throughout the UCSD campus. This involves developing and implementing plans for teaching and retention of an outstanding and diverse faculty, and providing administrative and budgetary coordination of the Center for U.S.-Mexican Studies and the Center for Iberian and Latin American Studies.
The Director will establish a UCSD Advisory Council on Latin American Studies, to be composed of distinguished experts and citizens from various countries of the Western Hemisphere, maintain liaison and promote collaboration with the Institute of the Americas, and represent the University in appropriate forums at local, state, national, and international levels.
The Director reports directly to the Vice Chancellor for Research, collaborates with deans, department chairs, and other university officers, and serves as special advisor to the Chancellor on Latin American affairs.
Professor Smith's appointment took effect at the beginning of the Fall Quarter 1994; he has been a member of the Department of Political Science since January 1987, he has served as director of the Center for
Iberian and Latin American Studies since July 1989, and he is the holder of the Simon Bolivar Chair in Latin American Studies.
I am delighted that Professor Smith has accepted this appointment.
