s you may already know, Professor David Wong has decided to step
down as Provost of Warren College at the conclusion of the
1993-94 academic year. Chancellor Atkinson and I take this
opportunity to thank Professor Wong for his dedicated service to
UCSD as Provost since 1985 and wish him every success in his
academic endeavors.
Given Professor Wong's decision, we are proceeding with an
on-campus search. With the help of the Academic Senate, Council
of Provosts, Warren College Dean and Advisory Committee, we
are forming the Search Committee for the Provost of Warren
College, comprised of faculty, staff and student representatives.
At this time, applications and nomination are invited for the
open position. The responsibilities of the Provost and key
criteria to be used in the selection process are appended
herewith.

PROVOST OF WARREN COLLEGE - DESCRIPTION OF THE POSITION
University of California, San Diego
Reporting directly to the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs,
the Provost is the academic-administrative leader of the College.
The Provost develops goals and implements the long-range academic
plan for the College; shares with the College faculty, the
appropriate academic departments, Academic Deans and the
respective Coordinators/Directors the responsibility for the
supervision of academic programs developed and administered under
the aegis of the College; promotes high academic standards
in instruction and research among College students and faculty;
advances the needs of an outstanding and diverse student body;
provides leadership to the programmatic aspects of College
residence-hall life; develops and promotes the recreational,
social, cultural, and governmental activities in the College;
works with the administration, Academic Senate, and other
academic units in the maintenance, innovation, development,
and implementation of admission and graduation standards,
undergraduate curriculum, General Education requirements, and
established educational and course policies and procedures;
cultivates gifts in support of alumni and student activities; and
represents the College on various campuswide and Universitywide
committees.
Additionally, the Provost reviews and recommends on all
appointments, merits, and promotions of faculty affiliated with
the College; serves as Chair of the Council of Provosts on a
rotating basis, and as ex-officio member of the College's
governing body, advisory to the Provost; promotes and executes
orientation sessions for new College undergraduate students and
their parents; certifies students of the College for graduation;
develops the annual budget of the College and accounts for
College fund expenditures; engages in teaching and research, to
the degree permitted by administrative responsibilities,
commensurate with faculty rank; assumes responsibility for the
functioning of the Provost Office, providing general direction to
the staff; and responsibility for the oversight and supervision
of College personnel and activities in the student life area.
The Provost of Warren College also serves as the Director of the
Academic Internship Program.
QUALIFICATIONS/KEY SELECTION CRITERIA
* Must hold a full-time, UCSD tenure appointment.
* Academic stature, credibility and administrative
experience.
* Demonstrated leadership; ability to engage the College
openly and cooperatively; ability to encourage expression of
diverse interests.
* Capability to stimulate new directions, to promote existing
resources to best advantage, to build for the future.
* Acquaintance with range of issues facing undergraduate
education. |
