SUBJECT:    Alumni Association Award Recipients for 1994

I am pleased to announce the recipients of the 1994 Alumni Association
Awards for Excellence. Selected to receive the Outstanding Alumna Award
is Laurel Wilkening, Ph.D. '70. In January of 1993 she was appointed by
The Regents of the University of California as the third chancellor of
the University of California, Irvine. She has had a distinguished
career as a planetary scientist, appointed Vice Chairman of the National
Commission on Space by President Ronald Reagan and subsequently Chair of
the Vice President's Space Policy Advisory Board.

The Professional Achievement Award will be presented to Yareli
Arizmendi, '86, M.F.A. '91, an accomplished actress, dramaturgist,
playwright, and educator. Arizmendi has had a successful stage and film
career co-starring in several popular films including the highest
grossing foreign film of 1993, "Like Water for Chocolate." She writes
and performs her own multimedia performance-art pieces around the
country in addition to teaching and performing in San Diego and Mexico
City.

Immo Scheffler, professor of biology and chairman of the Department of
Biology from 1990-92, will be honored for Distinguished Teaching.
Scheffler's unflagging commitment to instructional excellence is
evidenced by the many major teaching awards he has won including the
"Excellence in Teaching Award" by Revelle Seniors in both 1975 and 1981,
an "Outstanding Faculty Advisor Award" in 1980, and the UCSD
Chancellor's Associates Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1984. He
has served on the Academic Senate Committee on Educational Policy and
the Chancellor's Committee on Instructional Improvement.

Jerome Katzin will receive the Honorary Alumnus Award. As president of
the UC San Diego Foundation for the past two years, and a member of the
Board for more than 10 years, he has been the volunteer leader most
responsible for the rapid growth in private support to UCSD. In the
past five years alone, UCSD has received $247 million in private
support. The Foundation currently manages assets in excess of $80
million. Mr. Katzin is a retired partner/Managing Director with the
firm of Lehman Brothers. He was a founder and is current Chairman of
the UCSD Judaic Studies Board of Visitors. He and his wife, Miriam
recently endowed the Katzin Chair in Jewish Civilization at UCSD.

The awards will be presented on June 11 at the Awards for Excellence
Banquet in the Price Center Ballroom. Everyone is invited to attend.
