SUBJECT:    Extension of Exceptions to Policy - Trial Employment SPP 250.1/A&PS 125.1, Probationary Period SPP 760.25(b) and 760.26/A&PS 188.24(b) and 188.25, Layoff and Reduction in Time

On August 12, 1992 the campus was notified of a trial employment pilot
program intended to encourage supervisors to hire laid off employees for
position vacancies at UCSD. The trial employment pilot program requires
that employees on layoff status who are preferentially rehired, undergo a
probationary period of up to six months. During the trial employment or
probationary period, if the employee is returned to layoff status, either
by the employee's choice or by the department, preferential rehire and
recall rights would be fully restored.

Policy exceptions enabling the trial employment pilot program to occur
were granted through June 30, 1994. In recognition of continuing
budgetary constraints, an extension of this policy exception has now been
approved until June 30, 1995.

Manual Holders are requested to file a copy of this notice of extension
with A&PS 125 and 188, PPM/SPM 250-250 and 250-760 along with the prior
notice regarding the Trial Employment Program dated August 12, 1992.
