SUBJECT: | Injury & Illness Prevention Program Employee Training |
The Injury & Illness Prevention Program (IIPP) was established on
campus in 1991. The IIPP is the umbrella program that guides all
employee health and safety services and activities for the university
community. An integral component of the IIPP, faculty and staff safety
education, is an on-going commitment by the Office of Environment,
Health & Safety toward helping all faculty and staff understand the
relative risk of working in their chosen field and how to protect
themselves on the job throughout their careers.
EH&S offers an array of safety education classes designed to help
employees better protect their own well-being. Under the general IIPP
policy, one of these classes is a 90-minute training session which
focuses on six "core" safety topics applicable to university personnel
regardless of their function. The topics include the Hazard
Communication Program, avoiding repetitive motion injuries when using a
computer, earthquake preparedness, overview of the university's
Emergency Management Plan, fire safety and prevention of back injuries.
Under the IIPP guidelines, every employee must attend the session one
time. Managers and supervisors are responsible for assuring each of
their employees attend a session. Each participant receives an
attendance document which should become part of the employee's
permanent personnel record. The classes are typically held weekly at
the Price Center. Presentation times usually run from 9-10:30 am.
A schedule of upcoming classes is available through your Departmental
Safety Coordinator, listed in the latest copy of SAFETY BRIEFS, or
available from EH&S at x43660.
There are no reservations required. Simply show up at the session that
is most convenient for your personal schedule. The program is
fast-moving and interlaced with humor; but, more importantly, will help
all university personnel better understand how to avoid preventable
accidents which cost UCSD a tremendous toll every year in lost
productivity and worker's compensation costs.
