SUBJECT:    Announcement of the "Guide to Performance Management"

The UCSD Human Resources Department is pleased to provide you with an
important new resource, the "Guide to Performance Management." It was
developed by the Human Resources Department to serve as a training
manual, a reference tool, and a supplement to the "Performance
Management" course offered by Staff Education and Development. The
printed version is being distributed to designated supervisors and
managers campuswide, and an electronic copy of the "Guide" is
available to all employees on the World Wide Web. You may access the
"Guide" via InfoPath under Human Resources Online Services or directly
using the URL http://www-hr.ucsd.edu/online/staffedu/guide/.

Effective performance management creates a climate of collaboration
and trust upon which so much of the success of the Human Resource
Management Initiatives will depend. Performance management involves
describing the job, developing standards of work performance,
observing performance and giving feedback to employees, conducting
formal performance evaluations, and working with employees to identify
opportunities for professional development. Every employee who is
responsible for directing the work of others or managing the
performance of teams should be aware of and have access to this
essential resource.

Address your comments and questions to Staff Education and
Development, 534-4890, or staffeducation@hris1.ucsd.edu.
