ALL FACULTY AT UCSD

SUBJECT:    1995 Faculty Career Development Program

CALL FOR PROPOSALS
FACULTY CAREER DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM (FCDP) FOR ASSISTANT
PROFESSORS IN THE LADDER-RANKS AND ASSISTANT PROFESSORS IN
RESIDENCE

PURPOSE:

To support junior faculty efforts in research or creative
activities in order to enhance progress toward the Associate Professor
level.

ELIGIBILITY:

FCDP is open to all Assistant Professors in the Ladder-Ranks and
Assistant Professors In Residence. An awardee must be in junior
status when the transfer of award funds occurs.

DESCRIPTION:

A total of slightly over $100,000 has historically been provided by UC
Office of the President for this program which will continue to be
administered at UCSD by the Office of Academic Affirmative Action.
Typically, proposals request salary for one quarter of released time
($12,000-$15,000 depending on salary level) in order to concentrate
efforts on research or other creative activity. However, other types
of support provided in the past have included summer salary, cost of
research supplies and/or equipment, salary for a research assistant,
and travel expenses related to a research project.

SELECTION CRITERIA:

Applicants should be approaching consideration for advancement to
tenure, and regarded as highly promising and deserving of this
opportunity to enhance their research and scholarship record. In
addition, 1996-97 program awards will particularly focus on those who
can clearly demonstrate that extraordinary commitment(s) in other
areas such as student advising, teaching, curriculum development,
supervision of independent study or research students, and/or
committee service has reduced the amount of time available for the
research or other creative activity required for successful
advancement.

APPLICATION MATERIALS:

Copies of the Guidelines for Proposal Submission, the Applicant
Summary Sheet, and the Chair's Evaluation Form have been mailed to all
Department Chairs and Businesss Managers (MSOs) and can be obtained
from these individuals in your department.

DEADLINE:

Proposals for 1996-97 awards must be submitted by January 31, 1996.

REVIEW:

Proposals will be reviewed by the Affirmative Action Committee of
the Academic Senate, and recommendations will be submitted to Senior
Vice Chancellor-Academic Affairs Robert Dynes in March 1996. All who
submitted proposals for 1996-97 funding will be notified of the
results early in April 1996.
