A memorandum of March 10, 1995 from Vice Chancellor Marjorie Caserio announced
that a UCSD-Internal Search Committee would be formed to recommend candidates to
replace the current Dean of the Division of Social Sciences, Michael Rothschild,
who will step down from that position on June 30, 1995 to assume the position of
Dean of the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at
Princeton University.

The purpose of this present memorandum is to announce the final composition of
that Search Committee (above), and to inform you of the committee's desire to
receive input from all areas of the campus community.

DEAN OF DIVISION OF SOCIAL SCIENCES
University of California, San Diego

The Dean, reporting directly to the Vice Chancellor-Academic Affairs, is the
academic-administrative leader of the Division of Social Sciences, comprised of
nine academic departments--Anthropology, Cognitive Science, Communication,
Economics, Ethnic Studies, Linguistics, Political Science, Psychology, and
Sociology--each with a range of undergraduate and graduate programs. The Dean
is the academic-administrative leader of academic programs that include the
Academic Internship Program, Cognitive Science Program, Contemporary Issues,
Health Care & Social Issues, Human Development, Latin American Studies, Law &
Society, Middle East Studies, Science Studies, Science, Technology & Public
Affairs, Social Science 60, Teacher Education Program, Urban Studies & Planning,
and Women's Studies.

Among other responsibilities, the Dean sets Divisional goals; develops
long-range plans for the Division; promotes high academic standards in
instruction, scholarship and creative endeavors; promotes the needs of an
outstanding, diverse faculty and student body; provides leadership assistance to
departments and programs in resource and space needs, academic recruitments, and
advancement of faculty; works with the administration, Academic Senate, and
other academic units in the maintenance, innovation, development and
implementation of needed programs; represents the Social Sciences in various
forums at the local, state and national levels.

Prominent, therefore, in the consideration of the qualifications of the Dean are
the following criteria:

*  Must hold a full-time, UCSD tenure appointment.

*  Outstanding scholarly credentials with broadly recognized national stature,
   and strong commitment to academic excellence.

*  Vision for the Social Sciences; capability to stimulate new directions, to
   promote existing resources to best advantage, to gain external support, to
   build for the future, and support inter-divisional interests.

*  Leadership potential or demonstrated leadership, ability to engage the
   division openly and cooperatively, to encourage expression of diverse
   interests, to coordinate the needs of students, faculty and community, to
   support the campus commitment to achieve diversity in its faculty, staff,
   and students.

*  Capability of effective action in representing the Social Sciences at UCSD
   at the state and national levels.
