KEY ACADEMIC/STAFF ADMINISTRATORS

SUBJECT:    The Stuart Collection

Since its inception in 1982, the Stuart Collection has become one of
the most highly regarded collections of contemporary sculpture in the
world. The campus owes a debt of gratitude to James S. DeSilva of the
Stuart Foundation for his vision in the development of the Collection
and his generous support.

I am pleased to announce the renewal of the formal agreement between
the Stuart Foundation and the University, and I would like to take
this opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to working with the
Foundation's Advisory Committee. Our mutual goals are to maintain the
integrity of this art Collection and to apply the highest standards in
evaluating potential acquisitions of any outdoor sculpture for the UC
San Diego campus.

A recently issued PPM (510-3) requires University staff and faculty to
consult as early as possible with the Director of the Stuart
Collection regarding any plans or opportunities for the acquisition,
commissioning, or placement of works of art on the campus. Temporary
works designed by students that do not directly affect the Collection
are excluded. I am confident that this policy will sustain the
quality of outdoor sculptures at UCSD. If you should have any
questions, please contact the Stuart Collection Director Mary Beebe at
extension 42117.
