SUBJECT: | Alarm Monitoring System |
For the past several months, the campus Police Department has been evaluating
security systems in order to update our current alarm monitoring capabilities.
We are happy to announce that San Diego Alarm Company has been awarded the
bid to upgrade the current campus alarm monitoring equipment.
San Diego Alarm is an established and well-respected company within the
community. In fact, many of the existing alarm systems on campus were installed
by San Diego Alarm. The company has an excellent working relationship with the
University and is familiar with the needs within our environment.
The new system will offer several advantages by providing the campus with more
reliable equipment and increased automation. In addition, the new system will
allow departments currently being monitored by private security companies to
switch over to the UCSD Police Department monitoring system. This is not
possible with our current equipment. All alarms on campus are responded to by
UCSD police officers and having your alarm monitored directly by the UCSD Police
Department cuts down on response time considerably. Since the inception of the
campus security alarm ordinance in February 1994, the police department has
charged $15 a month to monitor an alarm. This is substantially below the
standard monitoring fee charged by outside central monitoring stations, and we
do not anticipate increasing this monitoring fee in the near future.
Departments considering a switch from current private monitoring services to the
police department's new system will continue to pay monthly charges to
Telecommunications, as the new setup will operate through the use of phone lines
as well.
Physical security alarm systems significantly reduce the probability of being
robbed or burglarized and increase the probability of apprehension when these
crimes are attempted in a protected facility. If you feel your area needs the
protection of an intrusion or panic alarm, please contact our Crime Prevention
Officer, Alan Jenkins, extension 43644. He can assist by conducting a security
survey and assessing your security needs at no cost to you.
If you currently have a system in place and wish to switch monitoring service
from an outside company to the police department, please contact our
Communications Manager, Mary Cabanding, extension 44361. We expect to have
the new system online by August 1, 1995. At that time, we can begin to accept new
accounts.
