KEY ADMINISTRATORS/KEY SUPPORT STAFF

SUBJECT:    Driver Training Seminar

We are extending an invitation for managers and supervisors of
departmental drivers to attend a driver safety training seminar. The
seminar will be held in the Institute of the Americas Auditorium from
8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 14, 1995.

Revised BUS-46 states that "each campus shall establish procedures to
identify properly authorized, trained, and licensed drivers." It also
notes that "in the development of these procedures, programs to foster
traffic safety consciousness should be considered." Environment, Health
and Safety and Transportation and Parking Services are offering this
driver safety training seminar in the belief that it will result in a lower
frequency and severity of accidents with fewer injured persons and damaged
vehicles.

During the last four years, auto liability insurance premium costs have
increased an average of nineteen percent each year, from $55,975 in fiscal
year 1990-91 to $112,032 in the current year. Increases in the frequency
and severity of auto accidents involving University vehicles are the
primary causes for these increasing costs. If the campus can lower the
frequency and severity of auto accidents through increased training,
monetary savings may be realized through lower departmental auto liability
premiums.

We encourage you to send your managers and supervisors to this meeting on
June 14. Please make reservations by June 7, with Doris Leary-Smallwood at
extension 49762.
