SUBJECT: Position Classification Process
Last September, Human Resources announced the publication of the Classification Process Review Team Report and solicited comments from the campus regarding the team's recommendations. To date, the recommendations have been favorably received and we have proceeded to implement many of them. While an automated market-based job evaluation system, as recommended in the report, will take a significant amount of time to develop, we have made considerable progress in improving the timeliness and communication aspects of the current classification process.
Through a combination of streamlined procedures and the implementation of pilot programs whereby authority is decentralized for some low-risk salary and classification transactions, we have been able to reduce the turnaround time for reviewing reclassification requests to within approximately 90 days.
To enhance employee understanding of the classification process, we have published a description of the process along with answers to a set of the most commonly asked questions. The information can be located on the World Wide Web (WWW) under the Compensation, Classification and Records home page at: http://www-hr.ucsd.edu/~classification/. The home page can also be located via InfoPath. A point of service survey was also implemented whereby supervisors are invited to comment on our service following a classification review.
Sandra Inzunza, Classification Assistant, is available to answer questions you may have regarding the classification review process. She is the appropriate person to contact regarding the status of your pending requests and can be reached at extension 40281 or via electronic mail (sinzunza@ucsd.edu).
I encourage you to become familiar with this information and other offerings contained on our World Wide Web site. You will find that we are providing frequent additional information to this electronic resource. Thank you for your cooperation in working together to further improve the classification process.
Administrators and support staff are encouraged to share this information with other employees in your areas.
