CHANCELLOR'S OFFICE May 22, 1996 TO ALL AT UCSD
SUBJECT: Appointment of Richard Attiyeh
Interim Sr. Vice Chancellor-Academic Affairs Chancellor-designate Robert Dynes and I are pleased to announce that, pending Presidential approval, Richard Attiyeh will assume the position of Interim Senior Vice Chancellor-Academic Affairs on July 1, 1996. Dr. Attiyeh's appointment is strongly endorsed by the Academic Senate.
Having served since 1982 as Dean of Graduate Studies and Research, Dr. Attiyeh is well known to the campus community. His post was expanded in 1994 to that of Vice Chancellor for Research and Dean of Graduate Studies. Dr. Attiyeh first came to UCSD in 1967 as a faculty member in
the Department of Economics. He served as department chair from 1972-76, and chaired several Academic Senate committees. Dr. Attiyeh has been
very active at the national level as well, currently serving as President of the Association of American Universities' Association of Graduate Schools (AGS) and as chair of the Steering Committee for the American Association of Universities/AGS project for Research on Doctoral Education. Prior to joining UCSD, he held faculty appointments at Stanford and Yale Universities. He received his Ph.D. in Economics from Yale University and his B.A. from Williams College.
Associate Graduate Dean David Sworder will serve as Acting Vice Chancellor for Research and Dean of Graduate Studies during this period. We are fortunate that Dr. Attiyeh has accepted this important responsibility during a crucial period of transition. Please join us in welcoming him to the position.
