SUBJECT: U.S. Postal Service Changes in Transportation Security
The U.S. Postal Service recently announced permanent changes in
"personal" mail collection procedures that will increase security of
commercial airlines carrying U.S. Mail.
ITEMS AFFECTED: Personal packages, weighing sixteen (16) ozs. and
over, addressed to international or domestic locations that are
normally deposited in mail collection boxes, such as street mailboxes,
lobby and apartment drop boxes/receptacles, and rural mailboxes.
Effective August 16, 1996, customers will have to bring all domestic,
international, and military APO/FPO mail bearing stamps (personal
mail) and weighing sixteen (16) ozs. and over to the U.S. Post Office
for entry with a retail clerk. These items must include a return
address. The U.S. Postal Service will retain a record of the mailing
and advise the customer of this when the item is mailed. THIS
U.S. POSTAL SERVICE POLICY CHANGE DOES NOT AFFECT BUSINESS MAIL
PROCESSED AT MAIL SERVICES WITH AN INDEX NUMBER.
The Price Center Post Office is qualified to process your personal
domestic items and the La Jolla Post Office on Wall Street, Golden
Triangle Post Office or the Post Office on Governor Drive in
University City can process your international mail.
These changes are designed to enhance security measures and to protect
the traveling public, postal employees and postal contractors who
transport U.S. Mail.
If you have any questions, please contact Mail Services at 4-1164.
