OFFICE OF THE VICE CHANCELLOR FOR RESEARCH

DEAN OF GRADUATE STUDIES

January 8, 1996

KEY ADMINISTRATORS/KEY SUPPORT STAFF

SUBJECT:    Appointment of Assistant Dean for Student Affairs, Office of Graduate Studies & Research

I am pleased to announce the appointment of David McDonald as
Assistant Dean for Student Affairs in the Office of Graduate Studies
and Research (OGSR). David succeeds Audrey Littlefield, whose
retirement from this position was effective December 1, 1995.

With Audrey's retirement, OGSR's Student Affairs unit has been
combined with David's Outreach and Affirmative Action unit. Because
both of these units performed overlapping functions, the new Student
Affairs, Outreach, and Affirmative Action unit will be able to carry
out these functions more efficiently and effectively.

As head of the new combined unit, David will be responsible for:
advising on grievances, conflict resolution, misconduct and other
non-academic issues; coordination with other campus units on matters
relating to housing, health insurance, career advising, counseling,
sexual harassment, and collective bargaining; outreach and
recruitment; affirmative action; and planning for orientation and
commencement.

Prior to coming to UC San Diego in 1993, David served as Recruitment
and Retention Coordinator at UC Irvine. He holds a Bachelor's degree
in Management and Marketing from the University of Oregon and a
Master's degree in Public Administration from the University of
Washington.

I am delighted that David has agreed to accept these new duties, and
I anticipate a smooth and successful transition for his expanded unit.
