SUBJECT:    North Campus Entrance Relocation & Temporary Closure of Scholars Drive

Construction of a major City of San Diego road project which will
affect UCSD campus traffic is scheduled to start on Wednesday, January
10, 1996. The City project will result in a reconfiguration of the
intersection of North Torrey Pines Road and Genesee Avenue. As a
consequence of the City project, the northern UCSD entrance at
Northview Drive will be relocated to the south on North Torrey Pines
Road. All aspects of the intersection reconfiguration and the campus
entrance relocation are being funded by the City.

The first phase of the project will include the construction of the
new campus entrance. During this phase (which is expected to take
approximately 90 days), Scholars Drive between the Information Kiosk
and the southern entrance to Parking Lot 356 will be closed. Campus
traffic will need to detour around the closure by using Salk Institute
Road, North Torrey Pines Road, and Northview Drive.

The campus loop shuttle will remain in service, but will follow the
above detour route in the construction area. Parking Lots 356 and 357
will remain open and accessible from the south, although some spaces
at the northern ends of the lots will be temporarily removed. Detours
for pedestrian and bicycle traffic will be available.

Following completion of the new campus entrance, the existing campus
entrance will be closed and the City's intersection reconstruction
project will begin. This phase will include the closure of the entire
North Torrey Pines/Genesee intersection for several months; some
detours will be available. Additional information regarding this work
will be distributed before construction begins.
