SUBJECT:    UCSD Office of Admissions and Outreach Hosts "Preview Day 96" Saturday, November 9, 1996

Prospective students, their families, school counselors and teachers
are invited to "Explore UCSD!" at Preview Day 1996, Saturday, November
9, from 8:00 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. This annual event is expected to
draw more than 4,000 visitors to UCSD for the day to attend
presentations on a variety of university-related topics, visit with
students and faculty, and tour the campus. Preview Day is an
opportunity to showcase the UCSD campus, its academic departments,
services and student organizations. Co-sponsored this year by
Associated Students of UCSD, it is the largest recruitment event of
the year for the Office of Admissions and Outreach.

Student clubs and organizations, student support services and academic
departments will host an Information Fair in the Library Walk area,
while ongoing information sessions cover the five undergraduate
colleges, housing, money matters, admissions, majors, athletics,
computers and the Internet, scholarship search service and campus life.
Faculty members from a variety of departments will discuss academic
expectations, and student panels will focus on both freshman and
transfer student questions. Student tour guides will lead campus tours
throughout the event.

A highlight of the day will be the presentation of the UCSD High
School Teacher of the Year award to Will Harvie, a physics teacher at
Torrey Pines High School. Chancellor Robert C. Dynes and Vice
Chancellor Joseph Watson will host the ceremony at 12:10 pm in the
Price Center Plaza. Through the Outstanding Teacher Recognition
Program, students from around the world who were admitted to UCSD for
the fall of 1996 were invited to nominate a teacher who had a strong,
positive academic influence on their lives. Mr. Harvie received the
most nominations.

"Preview Day provides an excellent opportunity for students and
parents to explore UCSD and meet with our faculty, staff and
students," says Mae Brown, UCSD's Director of Admissions and Outreach.
"We invite everyone considering applying to UCSD to come join us for a
day filled with workshop sessions, faculty presentations, campus
tours, food and fun. This is an invaluable opportunity for students to
discover UCSD. We also encourage our campus community to take part in
providing a positive experience for these prospective students."

The purpose of Preview Day is to give high school seniors and
prospective transfer students and their families an inside look at
life on the UCSD campus. From past experience, students who attend
Preview Day tend to make more informed decisions regarding their
choice of college during the November application filing period.
Visiting the campus has proven to be a major factor in a student's
decision to enroll at UCSD if admitted.
