SUBJECT:    Diversity Education Program "Principles of Community" (In Draft)

UCSD's Diversity Education Program is a collaborative effort, sponsored by the
Human Resources Department, co-sponsored by the divisions of Staff Education and
Development and Equal Opportunity/Staff Affirmative Action, and endorsed by the
Chancellor's Council and the UCSD Diversity Education Leadership Team. In the
effort to expand cultural awareness and appreciation among members of the UCSD
community, this campuswide initiative has been implemented through the
collaborative work of UCSD's leadership and staff, and continues to be delivered
to the UCSD campus. The goals of UCSD's Diversity Education Program are to:

  - build "Champions of Diversity" among UCSD's Leadership;

  - build the capacity of UCSD to provide ongoing diversity education across
   the campus, at the awareness level and beyond;

  - create a process for providing cultural competence information to faculty
   who are also administrators; and,

  - build into the UCSD infrastructure a system of incentives, rewards, and
standards to support culturally competent behavioral norms and
   organizational cultural change.

The Diversity Education Leadership Team is comprised of Vice Chancellors and
Department Directors from across vice chancellorial areas who have assumed the
responsibility to offer their knowledge, guidance, and support to the program.
Among other things, the Leadership Team has identified the need to create a
document reflective of UCSD's diversity principles and goals as a key step
toward communicating UCSD's values for diversity. The purpose of this document
is to affirm and acknowledge the unique contributions of all members of the UCSD
community, and to identify the principles and values that support all
individuals who contribute to the University. This statement of UCSD's values
and expectations entitled, "Principles of Community," was developed by a
subcommittee of members appointed from the Diversity Education Leadership Team
and the Diversity Education Training Team, a group of selected UCSD employees
who are responsible for providing diversity education to UCSD staff. The draft
version of UCSD's "Principles of Community" has been endorsed by members of the
Leadership Team, the Training Team, and certain representatives of the Academic
Senate, who serve on the Diversity Education Faculty Committee.

To ensure that employees have an opportunity to assess the "Principles of
Community" in draft and provide comments, a review period is being offered to
the UCSD community. The attached draft version of the "Principles of Community"
is being provided to you for your consultation. The comments received during
this review will assist us in shaping the final version of this document.
Because the "Principles of Community" is a vital component of support to UCSD's
diversity, your comments are welcomed and appreciated.

The review period will end on Friday, January 3, 1997. Please send your
comments to Rosemarie Mirano, Staff Education and Development, via electronic
mail at rmirano@ucsd.edu or by campus mail at 0922.

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, SAN DIEGO
PRINCIPLES OF COMMUNITY

The University of California, San Diego is dedicated to learning, teaching, and
serving the needs of society through education, research, and patient care. Our
international reputation for excellence in these areas is due in large part to
the cooperative and entrepreneurial nature of the UCSD community. UCSD faculty,
staff, and students are encouraged to be creative and are rewarded for
individual as well as collaborative achievements.

To foster the best possible working and learning environment, UCSD strives to
maintain a climate of fairness, cooperation, and the utmost professionalism.
These principles of community are vital to the long-term success of the
university and the well-being of its constituents. UCSD faculty, staff, and
students are expected to acknowledge and practice these basic principles as
individuals and in groups.

  -  We value each member of the UCSD community for his or her individual
and unique talents, and applaud all innovative efforts to enhance the
quality of campus life. We recognize that each individual effort is
vital to achieving the goals of the university.

  -  We value the cultural diversity of UCSD and realize that it enriches
our lives. We celebrate this diversity and support culturally competent
     working relationships.

  -  We are an open, flexible university that routinely adapts to cultural
differences among the faculty, staff, students, and community.

  -  We affirm each individual's inherent right to dignity and strive to
maintain a climate of justice marked by mutual respect for each other.

  -  We acknowledge that our society carries with it historical and divisive
misunderstandings and biases based on race, ethnicity, gender, age,
disability, sexual orientation, and religious or political beliefs. We
seek to foster mutual understanding and tolerance between individuals
and groups. We promote awareness through education and encourage
     constructive strategies for resolving conflict.

  -  We confront, reject, and will appropriately respond to acts of
discrimination, including those based on race, ethnicity, gender,
age, disability, sexual orientation, and religious or political
     beliefs.

  -  We affirm the right of freedom of expression at UCSD. We promote open
expression of our individuality and our diversity within the bounds of
     courtesy, sensitivity, and respect.

  -  We are committed to the highest standards of civility and decency
toward all. We are committed to creating and maintaining a community
where all people can work together in an atmosphere free from all forms
     of abusive or demeaning treatment.

  -  We are devoted to serving the public and we encourage members of the
campus community to participate in public service activities in their
     own communities.

  -  We support the establishment of programs and initiatives that contribute
to the fulfillment of these principles.

By working together with mutual respect, awareness, and open communication, we
as members of the UCSD community can sustain the excellence of our institution
and push ourselves beyond established boundaries. We represent diverse races,
creeds, cultures, and social affiliations coming together for the good of the
university and those communities we serve.
