MAIL SERVICES

July 11, 1996

ALL AT UCSD (Excluding the Medical Center)

SUBJECT:    Mail Service Seminars

On July 1, 1996, the U.S. Postal Service implemented Classification Reform,
which is the most dramatic and sweeping change of mailing rules in over one
hundred years. The basic principle of Classification Reform is that it
strongly encourages, through discounted rates, the implementation of
automation compatible mail. Automation compatible mail may be processed
economically by high speed barcode readers. In return, the U.S. Postal
Service is stating that rates will stabilize until the year 2000. As a
large volume mailer, these changes will benefit us if we make some simple
adjustments in the way we address our mail.

Mail Services and the U.S. Postal Service will be presenting a series of
seminars to assist the campus community in effectively meeting the new
challenges ahead of us. The purpose of the seminars is to help make your
mail automation compatible. In turn, this will help the University achieve
maximum postal discounts under the classification rules and regulation
changes. Moreover, automation compatible mail is usually delivered by the
U.S. Postal Service and Mail Services more quickly than other kinds of
mail.

Mail Services has thirty seats available at each of the following
"Addressing for Automation" and "Mail Piece Design" seminars (each will
include both subjects):
