SUBJECT: | Appointment of Wolfgang H. Berger, Interim Director, Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) | I am pleased to announce that Professor Wolfgang H. Berger, Geosciences
Research Division, SIO, will assume the position of Interim Vice Chancellor
for Marine Sciences, on September 1, 1996.
Professor Berger is a distinguished member of the UCSD faculty and is
intimately familiar with the history and operation of the Scripps campus. He serves as Director of the Geosciences Research Division and in his 27
years at Scripps has advanced from Assistant Research Oceanographer to full
Professor. He is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement
of Science, the American Geophysical Union, the Geological Society and
member of the European Union of Geophysical Science as well as the American
Society of Limnology and Oceanography. His service on numerous national
boards has earned him the respect and admiration of his colleagues
nationally and internationally, and he is the recipient of several
distinguished honors. Among the most recent are the Ewing Medal presented
by the American Geophysical Union, the Prince Albert I medal, and the
highly regarded Balzan Prize, awarded for outstanding achievement in the
humanities and sciences. Professor Berger received his Ph.D. in
Oceanography from UC San Diego, his M.Sc in Geology from the University of
Colorado, Boulder and his Candidate of Geology from the University
Erlangen, Bavaria.
Please join me in welcoming Dr. Berger to this position. We are fortunate
that he has accepted this responsibility during an important period of
transition at Scripps Institution of Oceanography.
