SUBJECT:    Establishment of the Center for Research in Biological Structure

Following consultation with the Academic Senate and campus administrative
officials, I am pleased to announce the establishment of the Center for
Research in Biological Structure (CRBS) as a campus research unit.

The Center will provide a framework for faculty from many departments to
carry out interdisciplinary collaborative research on biological structure,
for enhancing the campus's ability to obtain grants in this area for
interdepartmental and multidisciplinary collaborations, for integrating
biological structure components into undergraduate and graduate curricula,
for developing new technologies relevant to biological structure, and for
eventually setting up a high-technology data acquisition and analysis center.

Mark Ellisman, Professor of Neurosciences, will serve as the Center's first
director, and Susan Taylor, Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry, will
serve as Chair of the Executive Committee. Membership in the Center is open
to all interested faculty members and research scientists. Professor
Ellisman may be reached at mhellisman@ucsd.edu, x42251, mail code 0608;
Professor Taylor at staylor@ucsd.edu, x43677, mail code 0654.
