SUBJECT:    Diversity/Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Nominations

I am pleased to announce the nomination period for the Diversity/Equal
Opportunity/Affirmative Action Awards. This event is designed to recognize
those individuals, departments and organizational units who have made
outstanding contributions to the diversification of the career staff work
force at UCSD during the affirmative action reporting period from
November 1, 1994 through April 30, 1996.

Nominations will be received at the Office of Equal Opportunity/Staff
Affirmative Action at Torrey Pines Center South, Room 370. All nominations
must be received by Tuesday, October 1, 1996. Electronic nominations will be
considered provided all nominating materials and personal electronic
endorsements from the nominators are received by the deadline. Please send
your nominations to Irma Martinez at imartinez@ucsd.edu.

A committee has been appointed to review nominations and will consist of a
representative from each Vice Chancellor unit.

Nomination Criteria:

1. Individuals who have made a noteworthy contribution in one or more of
the following areas: equal opportunity, affirmative action, and
diversity. For example, staff volunteers who tutored disadvantaged
youth in the community, individuals who have actively participated and
helped promote staff through the mentorship/sponsorship program, and

supervisors who have diversified their department's workforce through
outreach and hiring.

2. Departments that have actively supported or initiated programs in the
areas of equal opportunity, affirmative action, or diversity. For
example, participation in programs such as the Rotation Program or
Summer Youth Program, and development of an affirmative
action/diversity training program.

3. Departments that have shown progress in increasing the representation
of women or people of color over a period of time. This criteria
will also consider the number of placement goals that they have met
during this period.

4. Departments that have diversified their work force by increasing the
representation of other protected groups, such as people with
disabilities, special disabled veterans, and Vietnam-era veterans.

In order to give all nominations adequate opportunity, length of the
narrative statement should not exceed 300 words. Supplemental materials such as
newspaper articles can be submitted. Please submit nominations by Tuesday,
October 1, 1996. All award recipients will be announced prior to the awards
reception on November 22, 1996.
