OFFICE OF THE CHANCELLOR
January 14, 1997
ALL AT UCSD
SUBJECT: | Retirement of Associate Chancellor Nolan Penn |
Dr. Nolan Penn, who has served my office since 1988 as Associate
Chancellor, will retire from active duty on January 31. Dr. Penn played a leading role in UCSD's efforts to increase diversity. On
behalf of the whole campus, I want to express our gratitude for his
dedicated work.
I intend to maintain the university's commitment to making the campus
as diverse as the community it serves. I have asked the various
committees that advise me on issues of diversity to review their
programs and activities and report to me next quarter. Once I receive
their reports, I intend to appoint a commission whose charge will be
to recommend strategies for continuing and enhancing UCSD's efforts to
achieve diversity.
Three members of my staff are working together to facilitate the
review and to press forward on diversity issues. They are Associate
Chancellors Ramon Gutierrez and Susan Kirkpatrick, and Assistant
Chancellor Linda Williams. If you have suggestions, concerns, or
questions, you may contact them at extension 4-6861.
