OFFICE OF THE CHANCELLOR

ALL AT UCSD
SUBJECT: | Reaffirmation of University of California, San Diego's Equal Employment Opportunity Policy |
I am taking this opportunity to reaffirm UCSD's commitment to equal
employment opportunity and affirmative action. UCSD's policy governing
nondiscrimination in employment requires us to assure that all personnel
actions, including recruitment, hiring, promotion, transfer, training,
career development, layoff and termination of both faculty and staff at
the University are made in a fair and impartial manner. Please refer to
the Nondiscrimination Statement for a summary of governing regulations and
faculty/staff grievance policies on the reverse side of this notice. I
strongly support this policy and reaffirm that fair employment practices
will be implemented throughout all human resources activities at UCSD.
This year the Staff Affirmative Action Vice Chancellor Working Group,
which has a representative from each Vice Chancellor/Director area, has
met on an ongoing basis to develop action plans and to ensure that the
nondiscrimination policy is disseminated to UCSD employees. These action
plans, incorporated in the Staff Affirmative Action Plan, will be
published in the Spring of 1997.
Relevant policies, such as the equal employment opportunity policy, and
affirmative action programs will continue to be discussed in the
Supervisory Training Laboratory and the New Employee Orientation sessions.
Furthermore, UCSD will continue to distribute its nondiscrimination
statement widely to all recruitment sources.
While all managers and supervisors are responsible for implementing the
Affirmative Action Plan, responsibility for overseeing the implementation
of staff and academic Affirmative Action Plans, including program
accessibility for persons with disabilities, has been assigned as follows:

NONDISCRIMINATION STATEMENT
University of California Policy #12:
It is the policy of the University not to engage in discrimination against
or harassment of any person employed by or seeking employment with the
University of California on the basis of race, color, national origin,
religion, sex, physical or mental disability, medical condition
(cancer-related), ancestry, marital status, age, sexual orientation,
citizenship, or status as a Vietnam-era veteran or special disabled
veteran. This policy applies to all employment practices, including
recruitment, selection, promotion, transfer, merit increase, salary,
training and development, demotion, and separation. This policy is
intended to be consistent with the provisions of applicable State and
Federal law and University policies.
In addition, it is the policy of the University to undertake affirmative
action, consistent with its obligations as a State and Federal contractor,
for underutilized minorities and women, for persons with disabilities, and
for Vietnam-era veterans and special disabled veterans. The University
commits itself to apply every good faith effort to achieve prompt and full
utilization of minorities and women in all segments of its work force where
deficiencies exist. These efforts conform to all current legal and
regulatory requirements, and are consistent with University standards of quality and excellence.
In conformance with Federal regulations, written affirmative action plans
shall be prepared and maintained by each campus of the University, by each
Department of Energy Laboratory, by the Office of the President, and by the
Division of Agriculture and Natural Resources. Such plans shall be
