SUBJECT: Appointment of Ravi Shankar, UCSD Regents' Professor
I am pleased to announce the recent approval of the first Regents' Professor at UCSD: Ravi Shankar, the internationally renowned musician and legendary virtuoso sitarist, composer, and scholar of classical Indian music.
Ravi Shankar's long and distinguished musical career includes performances at many of the world's leading venues, numerous recordings, an extraordinary list of accolades, as well as interdisciplinary work and music for film. His experiments with cross-cultural musical collaboration are unparalleled, and stand among the most significant cultural accomplishments of our time. As one of the leading figures of the twentieth century, his presence at UCSD will broaden our awareness of the enormously rich heritage of music. This distinguished appointment is intended to enrich University life, and Professor Shankar is interested in sharing his vast experience and musical knowledge with UCSD faculty and students.
In response to this appointment, the Ravi Shankar Foundation has extended a special invitation to the UCSD community: on Saturday, October 11, at 7:00 p.m. he will perform at the California Center for the Arts in Escondido. Everyone with a UCSD ID will be given a 10% discount on the ticket price (1-800-988-4253). Proceeds from this concert with benefit the new Ravi Shankar Foundation, a resource for researching classical Indian music, archiving Ravi Shankar's works, presenting concerts, awarding scholarships for advanced studies, and encouraging the study of world music and performing arts.
