ALL AT SIO
SUBJECT: Proposed Appointment of Charles F. Kennel
as Director of SIO and Vice Chancellor of Marine Sciences
Dr. Charles F. Kennel has been identified as the candidate to be proposed to the UC Board of Regents as the new director of SIO and Vice Chancellor Marine Sciences at UCSD, pending appropriate campus review. Dr. Kennel is a past associate administrator for NASA's Mission to Planet Earth program and currently serves as Executive Vice Chancellor at UCLA. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and a recipient of the NASA Distinguished Service Medal.
Following confirmation, it is proposed that Dr. Kennel assume his duties at SIO on January 1, 1998. Both the Search Committee for the new SIO Director and I believe that Dr. Kennel is the outstanding leader and scholar of vision who will deftly lead SIO into the next century.
