SUBJECT:    Appointment as Associate Vice Chancellor

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Professor David Miller as
Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Planning and Programs in the
Office of the Senior Vice Chancellor-Academic Affairs. Professor
Miller will assume this position on January 2, 1998, following
completion of his sabbatical leave.

Professor Miller was appointed to the faculty of the Department of
Applied Mechanics and Engineering Science (AMES) in 1966 following the
award of his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from Princeton University.
He is a highly respected scientist, teacher, and campus citizen, who,
over the course of three decades at UCSD, has compiled a truly
impressive record of scholarship, teaching, campus and administrative
service.

I am confident that his appointment as Associate Vice Chancellor will
continue the tradition of outstanding leadership and vision that has
marked his tenure as Associate Dean of the School of Engineering.
Please join me in welcoming him to the Office of the Senior Vice
Chancellor-Academic Affairs in January.
