ALL AT UCSD (CAMPUS AND MEDICAL CENTERS)
SUBJECT: | Appointment of Work Group to Increase Underrepresented Student Graduation Rates | Last July, Chancellor Dynes had a discussion with community leaders
leading to an institutional commitment by UCSD to increase the
retention through graduation rates of African Americans, American
Indians, and Chicanos to seventy percent.
To facilitate the achievement of this objective, I have charged a Work
Group to identify and implement strategies that will result in
tangible progress toward increased graduation rates of
underrepresented students at UCSD. The Work Group is chaired by
Patrick Velsquez, Director of OASIS. Other members of the Work Group
are:
Juan Astorga, Cross Cultural Center
Manuelita Brown, Honors Achievement Workshops & MOI
Ashanti Houston, Marshall College
Kathy Kailikole, OASIS
Sandra Kripalani, OASIS
George Lipsitz, Ethnic Studies
Vince Manson, Muir College
Jorge Mariscal, Literature
Kate Okikiolu, Math
Agustin Orozco, OASIS
Norma Pacheco, Warren College
Rosemary Quintero, Student Affirmative Action Committee
Kathia Romo, Student Affirmative Action Committee
Barbara Sawrey, Chemistry and Biochemistry
Mary Taylor, OASIS
Renee Barnett Terry, Revelle College
Dolores Valds, Upward Bound
Tony Valladolid, Student Legal Services
Edwina Welch, Cross Cultural Center
During the current academic year, this Work Group will identify
barriers and implement solutions that impact the achievement,
persistence, and graduation of underrepresented students at UCSD.
Their efforts will engage various members of the campus community in
the collective development and implementation of substantive,
effective strategies. Such strategies must address the complexity of
maintaining UCSD's commitment to enroll and graduate students from all
social backgrounds while complying with Proposition 209.
Dr. Velsquez (x41467) and other members of the Work Group invite
suggestions, questions, and comments from anyone in the UCSD community
on this issue.
