OFFICE OF THE ASSISTANT VICE CHANCELLOR -
HUMAN RESOURCES

March 6, 1997

KEY ADMINISTRATORS/KEY SUPPORT STAFF

SUBJECT:    New Minimum Wage

As a result of the passage of Proposition 210, the Living Wage Act,
the minimum wage in the State of California was increased to
$5.00/hour effective March 1, 1997. Although the University of
California is not required to comply with this new wage order, in the
interest of keeping University wages competitive with the market, a
policy decision was made to increase the minimum wage at UCSD to
$5.00/hour on March 1, 1997.

While there are no employees currently with regular pay rates below
$5.00/hour, there may be by-agreement rates which have been negotiated
reflecting an equivalent hourly rate that is less than the new
minimum. Key Administrators are advised to review any by-agreement
rates which have been negotiated to ensure they reflect a minimum
compensation level of $5.00/hour and make adjustments where necessary.

The salary range of the student Assistant I classification (title code
4922) was $4.75 - $5.99/hour. Effective March 1, 1997, this range was
revised to $5.00 - $5.99/hour.

Please share this information with supervisors and affected employees
in your area and update your Title and Pay Plan to reflect the new
range minimum of Assistant I. If you have any questions regarding the
above, you may contact Judy Johnson at jjohnson@ucsd.edu, or at
extension 40986.
